The Jones Sisters

The Jones Sisters were Miss Elsie Sluby, Miss Ida Webb, and Miss Frances Isabelle. They were born in the 1870's and 1880's, and lived together in and around Sykesville.

Fueled by Ida's classes at the Maryland Institute of Art and their innate love of beauty and history, they launched into a career of shooting fine photographs of a variety of subjects, many local, many in distant places; then hand coloring them with oil paints.

  • Elsie took the photographs.
  • Ida graduated from The Maryland Institute College of Art and hand colored the Photos.
  • Frances wrote the brief histories which accompanied the photos.

When it was suggested that they mass produce their Christmas cards and floral photos, they just laughed and said each piece was done by hand.
