Corporal David Lewis

Two Awards

On June 13th, 2009 Corporal David Lewis was recognized at the Town Council meeting for his outstanding performance in developing the Junior CSI Program.  As a recipient of the Exceptional Police Performance Award for 2008, Corporal Lewis will be presented the award from the Maryland Chiefs of Police Association in Ocean City, MD, on September 14th, 2009.

The Junior CSI Program offers 30 of our community’s middle school-aged children an opportunity to participate in a 4-week after-school program to learn various procedures and techniques relating to crime-scene processing.  Among the techniques taught are diagramming and photographing crime scenes, conducting grid searches, fingerprint dusting, etc.

The two programs conducted thus far in 2008 & 2009 have given our community’s youth the opportunity to observe police officers as people, as friends, someone who can be trusted.  True role models are hard to find and Corporal Lewis has demonstrated it can be done.  Positive results were produced based on the children’s class participation.  Children have stopped by the station to visit the officer they inter-acted with during the program and have also been known to “flag down” an officer on patrol just to say “hello”.   Our mission is to help our youth grow into upstanding young people who we hope will be able to make good decisions when confronted with a “right” or “wrong” situation.

Medal of Valor

At the Town Council Meeting held June 13, 2009, Corporal David Lewis of the Sykesville Police Department was presented the Medal of Valor for his exemplary actions when responding to a request to assist the Maryland State Police with a suicidal subject on the evening of June 23, 2009.

Unselfishly, and not concerned with his personal safety, Corporal Lewis was able to defuse a serious situation that could have resulted in harm to the suspect and/or other law enforcement officers on the scene.  Corporal Lewis exhibited extreme valor and bravery in the face of extreme danger by approaching a highly unstable armed individual during a very tense, dangerous and unpredictable event.  Due to his heroic actions, no injuries were incurred to the suspect or Corporal Lewis’ fellow officers.
