The Sykesville Police Department would like to remind all residents and visitors of the importance of driving slowly and carefully through our town.  Please remember to watch your speed at all times.  The posted speed limit in most of our community is 25 miles per hour.  Remember, Maryland law requires all vehicles come to a complete stop at stop signs.  This is especially important in our residential areas due to the increased vehicular traffic as well as our heavy pedestrian traffic.

Drivers share our roads with families walking, joggers out for a run and children riding their bikes.  And, as the holiday season approaches, more children may be walking or riding bikes on our roads during school break, December 23rd through January 3rd.    Take extra precaution during this time, as our children will be out and about.  Note that all pedal cyclists (bicyclists) are required by law to wear a helmet.

Please partner with the Sykesville Police Department; together we can keep our “community safe”.

Officers are on duty after the normal business hours and on weekends.

The Sykesville Police Department is pleased to announce

the hiring of Richard William Speake.

Officer Speake fills the vacancy created by the resignation of PFC Charles Robinson in November 2009.  Officer Speake brings 24 years of law enforcement experience to the Sykesville Police Department.  He served 20 years of distinguished service with the Laurel City Police Department where he was assigned to the Patrol Division, Canine Unit, Criminal Investigations Division and the Emergency Response Team.  Office Speake retired as a sergeant and held supervisory positions for more than 17 years.  The last four years he served as Training Coordinator for the Anne Arundel County Sheriff’s Office.  We are pleased to add another member to our staff with such vast experience and knowledge and look forward to his service to our community.
