Are you looking for a unique opportunity to put your professional
skills to use in dynamic and creative ways? Sykesville, a town of
approximately 3,200 in the southeast corner of Carroll County, will
be hosting a planning charrette during the third week of April. The
goal will be reuniting the formerly State- Owned Warfield Property
with the historic residential and commercial village core through a comprehensive
new Master Plan. This project has the strong potential to serve as
a model for the implementation of the State's recently adopted Smart
Growth Initiative. Charrette criteria will be focusing on meeting Smart
Growth goals while solving site-specific challenges.
The Warfield Complex was recently granted by the State from the Springfield
Hospital to the Town as a result of a competitive selection process. The
Springfield Hospital Complex has had a relationship to the Town core
since it's construction in the mid-1890's. The deeded parcel contains approximately
130 acres and more than a dozen historic buildings designed
by then-prominent Baltimore architects, all of which present substantial
redevelopment opportunities. The creative challenge arises from seeking
not only the highest and best possible use of the property but in unifying
the Warfield Complex to the existing town center. |
The current downtown has both an active local Historic District
monitored by a local Historic District Commission, and a Main
Street Project. This charrette will result in an updated Master Plan
for both the town and the redeveloped Warfield site.
To facilitate this process, Sykesville has retained a consultant team
to direct and coordinate charrette work groups. The team includes Donald
Kann, AIA of Kann & Associates from Baltimore, Sean Davis
of LDR International and Fred Glassberg from Crystal Hill Advisors,
both from Columbia. The Town and it's consultant team would like to invite
any interested professionals to participate in the upcoming April Charrette.
Whether your interests and experience are in design, planning, preservation,
development or any other related field, we would welcome your input,
energy and ideas. For further information, please contact: Barbara Lilly,
Redevelopment Project Coordinator.
